Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria not regularly removed from the oral cavity. Dirt penetrates the root of the tooth, where it causes inflammation. In advanced stages, it causes receding gums and subsequent tooth loss. It can manifest itself at a young age and can cause other diseases if left untreated.
